SPI Spot: A Hands-On Science and Play Space in Downtown Mount Vernon, Ohio

Looking for something fun and educational to do with children in Mount Vernon, Ohio? SPI Spot offers a unique indoor experience where science, technology, engineering, art, and math come together through hands-on play.

Located in downtown Mount Vernon, SPI Spot is a nonprofit community center and play-based learning space designed to encourage children and their caregivers to explore, experiment, build, and discover together. Rather than a traditional museum where visitors simply look at exhibits, SPI Spot encourages kids to get involved and learn through doing.

What Is SPI Spot?

SPI stands for Science Play-Space Initiative, and its mission is to bring people of all ages together to explore science and technology through play.

The organization operates SPI Spot as a community-focused space where families can enjoy interactive activities at their own pace. The facility is designed primarily for children and their caregivers, with activities that appeal particularly to preschool and elementary-aged children.

SPI Spot is located inside Kenyon College’s Wright Center at 400 South Main Street in downtown Mount Vernon. Although it partners with Kenyon College, SPI is an independent nonprofit organization rather than a department of the college.

Hands-On Learning Through Play

One of the things that makes SPI Spot different from a traditional children’s museum is its emphasis on open-ended, hands-on exploration.

Activities and exhibits change throughout the year, giving families opportunities to encounter different themes and challenges during repeat visits. Some of the features visitors may find at SPI Spot include physics demonstrations, building activities, sensory experiences, climbing areas, and science-based experiments.

The space includes several areas designed to encourage different types of learning and play.

Explore Science and Physics

SPI Spot’s interactive physics activities give children opportunities to see scientific concepts in action. Flexhibits have included air rockets, a vertical flyer, a ring launcher, and a circuit bench.

These types of activities allow children to experiment with cause and effect rather than simply reading about scientific principles.

Build and Create

For children who love to build, SPI Spot has large foam building blocks that can be used to create sculptures, ramps, tracks, and other imaginative structures.

Rotating tabletop activities may also incorporate tinkering materials, crafts, engineering challenges, and seasonal themes.

Climb and Move

Learning doesn’t always mean sitting still. SPI Spot includes large-motor play areas such as the Wandering Bridge and Treehouse Climber, where children can crawl, climb, and explore.

There is also an Enchanted Forest area designed with younger visitors in mind.

Experiment With an Augmented Reality Sandbox

One of the more unique experiences at SPI Spot is its Augmented Reality Sandbox.

The interactive sandbox allows children and families to explore concepts related to geology and topography while manipulating the sand. It combines physical play with technology to create an immersive learning experience.

Discover the Dark Room

SPI Spot also has a dark room with themes that change periodically. These immersive environments provide another way for children to explore and interact with their surroundings.

A Place for Curious Kids

SPI Spot is designed around the idea that children learn naturally when they are given opportunities to ask questions and experiment.

A visit might involve building something, testing a scientific concept, climbing through a play structure, looking at specimens through a microscope, or simply creating something with the available materials.

There is also a reading nook for children who need a quieter place to take a break from the more active areas.

The variety of activities means that children with different interests can find something to explore, whether they enjoy science experiments, building, sensory play, art, movement, or imaginative play.

SPI Spot Is Part of Downtown Mount Vernon

SPI Spot is conveniently located on South Main Street, making it easy to incorporate into a larger visit to downtown Mount Vernon.

Families can pair a visit to SPI Spot with a walk through downtown, lunch at a local restaurant, shopping, or a visit to another nearby attraction.

The location also places SPI Spot within the larger network of educational, cultural, recreational, and community destinations that make downtown Mount Vernon a popular place for families to spend time together.

Programs and Special Events

In addition to its regular Discovery Play hours, SPI offers additional programming throughout the year.

The organization has offered summer camps, workshops, field trips, and outreach activities at locations throughout Knox County. Some programs require advance registration, while special events and bonus days are announced separately.

SPI’s programming also often connects science and play to what’s happening locally or to seasonal themes. The organization has previously created activities inspired by local landmarks, community events, conservation, and current events.

For families who want more than a single visit, these changing programs can provide additional opportunities to explore STEM and STEAM concepts throughout the year.
