Parks and Recreation

The Kokosing Gap Trail is a 14-mile bike path paved over a former Pennsylvania railroad that runs from Mount Vernon through Danville. The trail is perfect for bikers, walkers, runners, and even rollerbladers.

Ariel Foundation Park is a 250-acre site reconstructed from a previous glass-manufacturing plant. The park has many visually breathtaking structures created from the former factory, as well as an observation tower, lakes, walking trails, a museum, and access to the Kokosing Gap Trail and Heart of Ohio Trail. Concerts, fitness classes, and other special events are held frequently in the Event Center located inside the park.

Located in the east end, off of Yauger Road in Mount Vernon, Wolf Run Park is a great place to go on a nature hike, run, or walk your dog. It conveniently has a fenced dog park attached to let your dog run freely.

In the summertime, Hiawatha Water Park is a great place to have some fun in the sun. The pool has two water slides, a lap swimming pool and a kiddy pool with a jungle gym. Hiawatha is a great place to lay out and enjoy the sunshine or take a dip in the pool.

There are four golf courses to choose from including three public and one private great for a day to practice on the greens. Spending a day on one of these beautiful courses is a great way to relax, practice your golf swing, and spend time in the fresh outdoors. There are also another thirteen golf courses within 20 miles of Mount Vernon.

Attractions

Looking to see a show? The Woodward Opera House is the oldest standing 19th Century theater in America. The opera house was recently restored and features plays, dance recitals, musical performances, and more. The theater is located in the heart of Mount Vernon’s downtown area. Catch a local play in this historic theater!

During the summer months, downtown Mount Vernon offers festivals where community members can enjoy fair food, live music, and visit local vendors. The Knox County Fair is also located in Mount Vernon and takes place at the end of July. 4H members can show their animals they have raised and visitors can enjoy music and spectator events while feasting on tasty fair food.

Ball Fields and Tennis Courts

The local YMCA offers a gym for working out, an indoor swimming pool, and offers sports for children including soccer, baseball, and swim lessons!

Off of Mount Vernon Avenue near Mount Vernon High School is Memorial Park which includes a playground, softball fields, skate parks, tennis courts, and pickleball courts providing activities for all ages. This is a great place to spend time during the warmer months.

Education

Higher education is also available in Mount Vernon including Mount Vernon Nazarene University and Ohio Central Technical College. Just neighboring Mount Vernon is Kenyon College located in Gambier, OH.
